Marie Anne DeVito

August 9, 1928 - October 17, 2021

Marie DeVito, 93, died Sunday, October 17, 2021, at her home in Long Pond. Born in Hillside, New Jersey, she was the daughter of Nicholas and Lena Casciano, who taught her the values of hard work and family. She was the wife of Carmin DeVito, with whom she shared 42 years of marriage. Marie was a force of nature. She spent her life as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and sister, persevering through the death of her 17 year old son Derek. Marie graduated from Newark State Teachers College in 1950. After retiring from a long and distinguished career as a New Jersey public school teacher, she moved permanently to her Emerald Lakes home. An active communicant at St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish, Pocono Pines, she participated in Crafty Ladies and Bible Study, among other activities. In 1990, she offered to help establish a new Secular Franciscan Fraternity at her former parish, Immaculate Heart of Mary in Scotch Plains, New Jersey. She went on to serve as minister of that Fraternity during the early 1990s and then as formation director. Marie was honored by her fellow Franciscans in 1999 for exemplifying the Franciscan spirit of charity, community, and love. She was given the title "Minister Emerita," a title that she held for the rest of her life. Her 75th Franciscan Jubilee anniversary would have been this year on December 15th. Other organizations that Marie participated in were College Club, League of Women Voters, and the Women's Auxiliary of Professional Engineers, for which she served as President. She is survived by her daughters: Lori DeVito Clark of Golden, Colorado; Virginia Patterson of Midlothian, Virginia; Patricia DeVito of Riverton, New Jersey; sister, Angela Schlump of San Juan, Puerto Rico, brother, Nicholas Casciano of Mt. Kisco, New York, nine grandchildren: Derek, Patrick, Theodore, Lindsey, Timothy, Hayley, Donovan, Veronica, and Nathanael; great-grandchildren: Zoe, Oliver, Lila and Waylon; and dozens of cousins, nieces and nephews. She and her husband started a DeVito family reunion tradition that grew to over 75 family members over 30 years of celebrations. Viewings will be held Wednesday, October 20, 2021, 3 to 5 p.m. at Bolock Funeral Home, 6148 Paradise Valley Road, Cresco and Thursday, October 21, 10 to 11:45 a.m. at St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish, 5112 Pocono Crest Road, Pocono Pines followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at noon celebrated by Rev. Sean Carpenter at the church. Rev. Alex Pinto will hold a graveside service at 11 a.m. Friday, October 22 at St. Gertrude Cemetery, Colonia, New Jersey. The family is requesting donations in memory of Marie, to the Nature Conservancy by visiting https://www.nature.org/en-us/about-us/where-we-work/united-states/pennsylvania/ Or the St. Max Kolbe parish in Pocono Pines by visiting www.stmaxkolbepoconos.org
